Journey into Nyx’s Planeswalker is none other than Ajani. Since the release of Theros, players long awaited the newest incarnation of the Cat Planeswalker. At a casting cost of 3GW and a starting loyalty of 4, Ajani comes packed with two +1 Abilities and an -8 Ultimate.

ajani, mentor of heroes

His first ability allows the player to distribute three +1/+1 counters among one, two, or three target creatures you control. That is pretty solid at beefing up single creatures by +3/+3 or 3 smaller creatures by +1/+1.

His second ability allows the player to see the top 4 cards of their deck, choose 1 planeswalker, creature, or aura card among them, and add it to their hand. Then places the remaining cards back on the bottom of the library. This ability is really good. Anytime you get to add a card to hand for free and never losing it to the graveyard is a plus.

His ultimate is a -8, but will gain you 100 life. While it’s not a game winner, it certainly helps you survive longer. I doubt players will utilize it much, but if they are at 8 or more loyalty, they will certainly consider using it as it will put themselves at a safer life point total.

Ajani, Mentor of Heroes is a must have for any green/white player. Whether you are playing aggro or control, Ajani will be useful in the long run. In a G/W Aggro Deck, Ajani can help make cards like Voice of Resurgence, Corsair of Kruphix, or Elvish Mystic greater threats than they were before. And if you run out of creatures, it can help you find more each turn. In a Bant Control deck, this card helps you find answers by digging through the top 4 cards. And if you like Super-Friends (Planeswalker deck), then Ajani is a must have. Here’s a potential list.

This deck focuses around four different planeswalkers to provide you with win conditions and answers. The four (4) one-of-creatures will provide mid to late game support while all of the other spells help buy the deck time to set up for the win. The strategy behind playing the deck is simple, shut down everything your opponent tries to do. If they are playing aggro, destroy them with Verdict. If they are playing control, slow them down with planeswalkers. If they are playing mid-range, out tempo them with a mixture of life gain, removal, and card draws.

Overall I’d give this card a 7 out of 10. It’s playable and will see play in the upcoming Standard Constructed format. Whether it’s in an G/W Aggro, or some kind of G/W/X mid-range/control deck, there is a ton of potential for Ajani’s newest incarnation.
